Better than the best
I've had a subscription to Peet's for years. I find Starbuck's dark roast tastes burnt. I saw this coffee in the Gold Box and decided to try it based on the reviews. It is absolutely delicious; the best coffee I've ever had. I enjoy it in my morning latte. It has a strong, robust smell, but blends smoothly in my latte's and mocha's. Even better, it is ORGANIC and FREE TRADE. How good can it get with the low price per pound and free shipping with Amazon Prime. Closed my subscription from Peets and buying Dark Horse from Amazon from now on. I LOVE IT!!!

LadyB
I have purchased this coffee from the company and I am so happy that it will be available through Amazon. The shipping is a little steep from Canada. This is one of the best coffees I have had. The name says it all. Anyone who likes a strong dark coffee will enjoy this. Also good is 454 Horse Power Dark.

Not good for super-automatic espresso/coffee makers
This looks like a pretty decent coffee, but its not suitable for super-automatic espresso/coffee makers. Problem is that the beans are TOO oily. Good if you self-grind... bad if you put the beans in a large hopper and expect them to automatically slide into the grinder when needed... The oil creates a stickiness which tends to keep the beans stationary. 5 stars if rating the coffee simply on the quality of the beans... would be unfair to downgrade the avg because they don't work with my setup.

Two reasons to read "God in a Cup"
There are two reasons to read God in a Cup, food journalist Michaele Weissman's true life account of the colorful young guys who are making gourmet coffee one of the sexiest culinary products you can buy. First Weissman is a terrific writer. Her book is funny and fast paced. She rolls out the story of her travels in coffee producing nations and here in the United States as if she were writing a novel. Read her description (with full sound effects) of a coffee cupping at the Cup of Excellence competition in Nicaragua, see how she brings to life a confrontation between eager coffee buyers and impoverished coffee farmers in Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia, and experience her rendition of dueling baristas as a barista competition, you'll begin to understand what all the fuss about specialty coffee is about. And that brings me to the second reason to read this book. God in a Cup provides a great journalistic thumbnail of the global marketplace. Weissman dramatizes issues like...

Finally, a readable book about coffee
Honestly- I just read a 250 page book about a beverage that I don't drink in, oh, about 72 hours. I literally couldn't put it down. Congratulations, Ms. Weissman, you have truly created a captivating narrative about a subculture I could never be a part of and made it this breathtaking world of whirlwind travel, chutzpah, occasional danger, nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic and caring, while preserving the genuine realities of the farmers, a tightrope I would have agonized over had I been you. "Business to me is about bringing people out of poverty", a quote from the book and summary of what this book is about to me: More than just coffee. The care and lengths that people like Duane and Geoff go to to insure fair prices, good quality, and abstracts such as health care, non-lecherous pre-financing, and willingness to either challenge the co-ops or empower the farmers to make up their own minds, while not entirely altruistic, is incredible. There were many laughs in there ("I hate those...

Product Description

Can a cup of coffee reveal the face of God? Can it become the holy grail of modern-day knights errant who brave hardship and peril in a relentless quest for perfection? Can it change the world? These questions are not rhetorical. When highly prized coffee beans sell at auction for $50, $100, or $150 a pound wholesale (and potentially twice that at retail), anything can happen.

In God in a Cup, journalist and late-blooming adventurer Michaele Weissman treks into an exotic and paradoxical realm of specialty coffee where the successful traveler must be part passionate coffee connoisseur, part ambitious entrepreneur, part activist, and part Indiana Jones. Her guides on the journey are the nation's most heralded coffee business hotshots—Counter Culture's Peter Giuliano, Intelligentsia's Geoff Watts, and Stump-town's Duane Sorenson.

With their obsessive standards and fiercely competitive baristas, these roasters are creating a new culture of coffee connoisseurship in America—a culture in which $10 lattes are both a purist's pleasure and a way to improve the lives of third-world farmers. If you love a good cup of coffee—or a great adventure story—you'll love this unprecedented look up close at the people and passions behind today's best beans. Top to learn more

Searching for caffeine nirvana
Most coffee lovers are satisfied to surf the web to learn about coffee. Michele Weissman actually got out and traveled to some off the beaten track places to learn about coffee from the source, the people who actually grow the stuff, as well as the people who process it and sell it in upscale coffee bars. The book is well written and paced, though the proof readers seemed to have missed a few inconsistencies of spelling and first/last name order. Still, it offers a fascinating view, written by an experienced journalist, into a world of people obsessed with the search for the perfect cup of joe. It is certainly enriching my foray into learning more about specialty coffee.

Interesting Analysis of Coffee
I've been a coffee drinker since before I probably should have been. When I saw this book I realized I probably didn't know much about the beverage I enjoy daily, and decided to have Amazon send it my way. I haven't read any of the other books in the series (that may change now), but the book revolves around the Philosophy of Coffee, and numerous writers take that concept in numerous different directions. Whether that direction offers insights into coffee itself, such as what it is made of and how it tastes; to the social impact of coffee, from the coffee industry to the transformation of the coffee house; to the effects of coffee, both as a stimulant and as a habit; and to coffee's philosophy, both applying philosophy to coffee, and applying coffee to philosophy. This book is sure to get you thinking (perhaps differently) about your cup of Joe, and offers insight into many different aspects of something millions of people take for granted.

The break we need
This is one of the many "Philosophy for Everyone" series published by Wiley-Blackwell which include interesting titles as "Porn", "Beer and Philosophy", "Motherhood and Philosophy", and many others. The subtitles are sure to draw a smile from the reader. "Porn"'s is "How to Think with Kink", and the other two I mentioned are: "The Unexamined Beer is not Worth drinking", and "The Birth of Wisdom" respectively. The present title under review is subtitled, "Grounds for debate" and edited by Scott Parker and Michael Austin. The contributors were eminently qualified to write about coffee and although not all of them have studied philosophy, it would be fair to say that they have their own philosophical viewpoints on this brown bean that is so loved around the world. One of the contributors, Kenneth Davids, the editor of "Coffee Review" provides a quick lesson on the types of coffee beans, the difference between the more expensive "Arabica" and the less expensive "Robusto" and how one...

Great Coffee!!!
Not much to say about this that hasn't been said in previous reviews. I'll get to the point.Full flavored, Smooth, Gives you that get up and go Caffeine Kick.Worth Every Penny. The three sisters blend is in the Top Three coffee's I've ever purchased.I will order again when I run out.

Three kicking sisters
I concur with the positive reviews about this coffee blend.I'm generally wary of medium blends, unless I know the region mix well enough. Overall, it's a sure bet. The medley of Indonesian, Central and South American beans, guarantees a light, medium and dark roast roller-coaster in every sip. This is a very even, all-around smooth blend, that's highly drinkable any time of the day -- or night ; ).If you can adjust the coffee-to-water ratio according to your liking before the brew cycle, you'll be able to even accentuate or lessen the "kick" these three sisters pack per cup. Don't think twice about buying this blend. It'll be your new favorite for quite some time.

Good, but not what I expected
I'm not a coffee snob but I do enjoy high quality coffee. This is a high quality coffee, but the description says "medium", which I thought was a medium roast. It's actually a blend of dark and medium to medium/light beans, with mostly darker roasted beans. There's nothing wrong with that, but I was expecting an all around medium roast. So you'll get a lot of that dark, earthy flavor if you enjoy that. I've been trending to prefer medium to medium/light roasts.I've been making this coffee in my Bunn Velocity Brew machine, and when brewed this way, at least to me, a lot of the flavors are muted. It could be the machine's fault, because it's designed to brew coffee in 3 minutes, and maybe this blend needs a full 4 minutes to extract all the flavor. It was only when I made espresso with my Gaggia machine that I finally was able to extract all the delicious flavors in this blend, which are flavors more reminiscent of dark roasts (earthy, cocoa). So, while I bought this...

Best Espresso Roasted in the USA
I have been making and drinking espresso for well over 15 years. As I am sure many of you know, the keys to good espresso are: a good machine, a good grinder, a fresh roast, and freshly ground coffee.I use a Pasquini Livia 90 and a Mazzer Mini grinder. This coffee is not designed for presses or drip coffee makers. That said, short of what you might experience in Tuscany or Northern Italy, this is the best espresso you might hope to make at home. When fresh, as it should be bought, the aroma from the bag is enough to convince you of the coffee's character. The crema is thick, the flavor is rich and full without the bitter aftertaste you experience with many of the Seattle blends (including Starbucks). This coffee is to be enjoyed on it's own, with maybe a touch of sugar or possibly as an Americano, it may be OK as a macchiato, but does not hold up as well as a cappuccino, or a latte, since the milk has a tendency to overwhelm the delicate flavor of this...

love this stuff
I can not tell you my love for Black Cat!!!! I mean I'm ordering espresso beans online come on I think that says it all! I first ran into this at Whole Foods and decided to try it, hands down one of the better beans out there. There is no bitter after taste and your breath isn't stale for days afterwards, also has an excellent crema oh and the beans aren't oily which ruins machines and gives you crappy espresso! If you like espresso I really recommend getting a bag of these you won't be disappointed!

Good
This is the only espresso bean I've bought, so I can't really compare it to other beans. But I like it. I just make regular coffee with it.Despite the instructions for my French Press to brew for only 4 minutes, I found that I had to brew for longer to bring out the rich sweet chocolatey taste. I let it stew for at least 8 minutes, but 15 minutes tastes good too. Brewing this bean for only 4 minutes results in a relatively diluted, tasteless coffee. I use a ceramic grinder to grind the beans immediately before brewing. It has a thick, mouthy texture. The beans smell strongly of smoky chocolate/truffle, almost cloyingly so. The taste is thick and sweet. I would recommend brewing for longer if possible to try and bring out more flavor. You get a 16 oz. (1 lb.) bag for the price, so it ended up being $20+ after shipping.

Where Can I buy Stumptown Coffee

When well-concepted and -executed, it can be a game changer for the farmer and those of us who like mightily fine coffee, which comes from mightily finely treated coffee beans, of course. “We’re going to these farms and working to make sure the products are consistently good quality product year after year, and making sure the people we’re working with are well taken care of, are paid a good price, have the equipment they need,... The food scene is fantastic, as well, and we’ve had a lot of people reaching out to us about [bringing Stumptown Coffee to Chicago]. Without technical assistance and using the power of the collective mind trust that resides daily here at Wormhole, drinking coffee and disguising themselves as customers, we connected with Mr. Feldman to get the latest on Stumptown for you. In addition to being vurry popular within the friendly confines we proffer you here at Wormhole Coffee , Stumptown is getting nods from all directions, but is still fairly hard to procure in the Chicago area–obvi. We’ve been carrying beans from Stumptown Coffee Roasters for a few days only and you have really responded, no doubt. ” One of those principles is to buy raw coffee beans from farmers with whom they can work with directly,” he continue, referring to the sometimes misunderstood, often misused label, direct trade. The goal in Chicago isn’t to sign up a slew of accounts, says Feldman, but to find solid partners who want to be serious about coffee and have fun at the time–right up our alley here at Wormhole. “We’re really having fun with [the] coffee [scene] in Chicago,” says Feldman. Quantity AND Quality: It’s Possible Stumptown carries wholesale accounts distributed in NYC, Philly, Boston, and Washington, D. So, as you all well know by now, The Wormhole here in Chicago has been featuring Stumptown Coffee Roasters on their pour-over bar for the past few weeks or so. we’ve been fortunate enough to sample many of those coffees here at the Table. the basics: the coffee: I can already tell, just from the aroma of this coffee, that we’re about to have a really great experience with this coffee. PT Gajah projects include building a centralized washing station, tracing coffee back to the farm level, and rewarding farmers for increased craft in their coffee cultivation. Then, the more and more I got into this thing called “specialty coffee,” I drank these Far East coffees less and less. Stumptown has been working with a buying group, PT Gajah, since 2007 to not only bring this coffee to America, but also to continue improving the quality of the crops in this region. I got broccoli, skim milk, a bunch of bananas, and a few sauces: sriracha, fish sauce and oyster sauce.
