Great, but not essential...
Is Apple's latest operating system, Snow Leopard, a strong, reliable OS that demonstrates the versatility of Macs? YesThat being said, is Snow Leopard an essential upgrade? No, not exactly.THE DIFFERENCE IS NOT THAT DRASTICThe differences between Apple's "Tiger" OS (10.4) and "Leopard" (10.5) were very noticeable, and there were many improvements that made the upgrade worthwhile. Such as Time Machine, Boot Camp, Quick Look, and many more The bulk of changes between Leopard (10.5) and this latest release, "Snow Leopard" (10.6), are "under the hood" so to speak, and therefore the average user might not notice as much of a change as they'd expect with an OS upgrade. But then again, why fix a bone that's not broken? Leopard was a success, and Snow Leopard improves on it, without radically altering the user experience. The majority of improvements affect system reliability, speed, and resourcefulness. There is also Microsoft Exchange support, which is great...

A bargain for the price and an OS for the future
The most remarkable thing about Snow Leopard is simply that it can be installed on a Mac running Tiger. You do not need to pay the money to buy the boxed set to upgrade if you never upgraded to Leopard. This means that you can upgrade a Tiger computer to Leopard using this disk. It is up to the user to determine if they have an ethical problem with that; Apple certainly knew that this was possible when they released the software: they understand and use DRM effectively and always have. The fact it is missing here tells me that they are primarily concerned with getting Snow Leopard unto as many computers as possible as fast as possible. I am sure part of that is the desire to have Snow Leopard outperform Windows 7 which debuts in October. So what do you get with Snow Leopard? The answer is largely performance boosts, although many of those are not really applicable (yet) since few (virtually none) third party applications use the performance gains offered by Snow Leopard...

Careful, As Always
It's always a good idea to wait until software has been out a little while before installing it, especially a new operating system. I bought the family pack and started installing it on four of our Macs. The first one went flawlessly, the second one had issues with reinstalling settings from a Time Machine back up and the third one went well until I tried to install Parallels, at which point some of the software running under Parallels didn't work. So, I went back to plain ol' Leopard on that machine and will wait until some updates come out for Snow Leopard from both Apple and the other software manufacturers from whom we've bought stuff (like Parallels). There's really no reason to rush into Snow Leopard anyway, honestly there aren't really any new features in it, it's just a refinement. Although for $29 bucks it's a deal, but not one most users should take just yet. Give it and your other software vendors a while to catch up and it'll be a bargain and a half...

One of Apple's most tremendous values
When I came across this Mac Box Set Family Pack I couldn't believe it was what I thought it was--given the price. But it was exactly what I thought it was. The four Macs in our household all got Snow Leopard and an upgrade to the '09 versions of Numbers, Pages, Keynote, iPhoto, iWeb, iDVD, iMovie, and Garage Band for around $200--total, not each--Wow. My share for my MacBook Pro was only $50.My only disappointment was that we couldn't upgrade our 5th Mac to Snow Leopard because it's a G4, and Snow Leopard only works with Intel Macs. I agree with the reasoning behind Apple's decision to drop G4 support at this point and move on with optimizing for multi-core machines, but I'm just a little bummed that the old Mini won't get the latest and greatest.

Unbelievable for this price!
I don't need to review this software. Others have done it. You can read about it elsewhere. What I do need is to answer the important questions.1. This set does upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. The specs listed and requirements have indicated that you must have at least Leopard on your computer, but when I received this boxed set (it was shipped from the Charlotte NC area to my house, virtually overnight, at the standard shipping zero price), it says on the back of the box it will upgrade Leopard AND Tiger.2. Your Mac computer MUST have an Intel processor, not a G4 or earlier, however.3. The bottom of the boxed set when I opened it even had a $229 price label, which is the price Apple charges if you buy it direct. This all being said, I've made three installations on home computers thus far, and all worked flawlessly. For about $23 dollars more than the price of a normal upgrade for ONE computer from Tiger to Snow Leopard, I've got a boxed...

The world's most advanced operating system.

Power of UNIX. Simplicity of the Mac.
Mac OS X is both easy to use and incredibly powerful. Everything--from the desktop you see when you start up your Mac to the applications you use every day--is designed with simplicity and elegance in mind. So whether you're browsing the web, checking your email, or video chatting with a friend on another continent, getting things done is at once easy to learn, simple to perform, and fun to do. Of course, making amazing things simple takes seriously advanced technologies, and Mac OS X is loaded with them. Not only is it built on a rock-solid, time-tested UNIX foundation that provides unparalleled stability, it also delivers incredible performance, stunning graphics, and industry-leading support for Internet standards.

Perfect integration of hardware and software.
Since the software on every Mac is created by the same company that makes the Mac itself, you get an integrated system in which everything works together perfectly. The advanced technologies in the operating system take full advantage of the 64-bit, multicore processors and GPUs to deliver the greatest possible performance. The built-in iSight camera works seamlessly with the iChat software so you can start a video chat with a click. Your Mac notebook includes a Multi-Touch trackpad that supports pinching, swiping, and other gestures. And the OS communicates with the hardware to deliver incredible battery life by spinning down the hard drive when it's inactive, by intelligently deciding whether the CPU or GPU is best for a task, and by automatically dimming the screen in low-light conditions.

Elegant interface and stunning graphics.
The most striking feature of a Mac is its elegant user interface, made possible by graphics technologies that are built to leverage the advanced graphics processor in your Mac. These technologies provide the power for things like multiway chatting, real-time reflections, and smooth animations. Fonts on the screen look beautiful and extremely readable. A soft drop shadow makes it clear at a glance which window is active and which ones are in the background. You can preview just about any type of file using Quick Look, and because the previews are high resolution, you can actually read the text. Built-in support for the PDF format means you can view or create PDFs from almost any application in the system.

Highly secure by design.
Mac OS X doesn't get PC viruses. And with virtually no effort on your part, Mac OS X protects itself from other malicious applications. It was built for the Internet in the Internet age, offering a variety of sophisticated technologies that help keep you safe from online threats. Because every Mac ships with a secure configuration, you don't have to worry about understanding complex settings. Even better, it won't slow you down with constant security alerts and sweeps. And Apple responds quickly to online threats and automatically delivers security updates directly to your Mac.

Built for compatibility.
The versatility and power of Mac OS X make it compatible in almost any environment, including Windows networks. It works with virtually all of today's digital cameras, printers, and other peripherals without the need to manually download separate drivers. It opens popular file types such as JPG, MP3, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. In addition, Mac OS X includes built-in support for the industry-standard PDF format, so you can read and create PDFs from almost any application in the system--perfect for sharing work with colleagues whether they use a Mac or a PC. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that, too. And Mac OS X Snow Leopard is the only operating system with built-in support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Server, so you can use your Mac at home and at work and have all your messages, meetings, and contacts in one place.

Innovation for everyone.
Mac OS X comes standard with a wide range of assistive technologies that help people with disabilities experience what the Mac has to offer--including many features you won't find in other operating systems at any price. For example, the built-in VoiceOver screen-reading technology makes it possible for those who are blind or have low vision to control their computer using key commands or gestures on a Multi-Touch trackpad. Mac OS X also offers out-of-the-box support for over 40 braille displays, including Bluetooth displays, and many other accessibility features, such as dynamic full-screen magnification, playback of closed captions, and a scalable screen.

Reliable to the core.
The core of Mac OS X is built on the same ultrareliable UNIX foundation that powers industrial-strength servers, helping to ensure that your computing experience remains free from system crashes and compromised performance. Even upgrading your Mac to the next version of Mac OS X is reliable and easy. It checks your applications to make sure they're compatible and sets aside any programs known to be incompatible. If a power outage interrupts your installation, it can start again without losing any data. Best of all, upgrading doesn't require reformatting your drive; you can keep all your compatible applications, files, and settings. And if something goes wrong when you're using your Mac, Time Machine is there to keep automatic backups of everything on your drive.

Fully featured, fully loaded.
Mac OS X comes in a single, full-featured version that includes a large collection of beautifully designed applications. They not only let you surf the web, conduct video and text chats, manage your contacts, and accomplish other day-to-day tasks--they also work together to make you more productive and let you have more fun.

See the Mac OS X Snow Leopard product page for more information.

Great Deal!
Other reviews have been helpful but have left out one important thing; the reason this is such a great price is it is 10.6 and the current version is 10.6.4 After installation simply use Software Update to update to 10.6.4 But, and this is what I wanted to let people know, the update is huge, 980MB, and took 2+ hours to download over a broadband cable. The whole installation process from installing from the DVD to downloading and installing 10.6.4 took me about 5 hours. That being said, you absolutely can't beat getting OSX 10.6, iLife'09 plus iWorks'09 for 5 computers for under $100.

No Title of Mine is Adequate
I read this book the first time back in the 70s, shortly after it was published. I've re-read it every two years or so since then. As in reading any number of times lines from Shakespeare, I never tire of their inherent beauty; my heart soars again and again re-reading Mattheissen's lines of ice-like clarity. The book on one level is a extraordinary travel documentary, describing brilliantly one man's experiences during a trip into a recently opened area in Himilayan Nepal. On a profoundly different level, the book also is a diary of his journey into his own heart and soul, one, perhaps, calling for more true bravery than any mere physical experience. There are many moments of exquisite beauty and intimacy that have left me sobbing, longing to be on the journey with Matthiessen and his travel companions. Matthiessen is an Everyman, seeking he really knows not what, searching for what may only be the quest itself. Perhaps he and his fellow...

Spectacular book
Spare, lyrical and honest, the Snow Leopard lifts the reader's mind to the high deserts of Nepal. Reading it is almost like spending an afternoon in quiet contemplation. I've read several books that deal with Zen and what makes this book work is that the author is unflinchingly honest about the internal journey that is at the heart of the book. He shares with the reader the mental baggage he brings with him, and that makes the external journey -- described in vivid detail -- seem all the more real. I can understand why other reviewers say they went to Nepal after reading it.

...in the footprints of the Himalayan leopard
A naturalist & Buddhist and adventurer extraordinaire Matthiessen met his traveling companion in 1969 on the Serengeti plain in East Africa. This newfound friend, George Schaller, later asks him if he wants to join him on his next trip to Nepal to study the bharal or Himalayan blue sheep. So late in 1973 the two set out on a journey to the Crystal Mountain that takes them west under Annapurna and north around the Dhaulagiri peaks and across the Kanjiroba to the land of Dolpo, on the Tibetan Plateau. This is a very literate and philosophic quest ripe with quotes from Lamas and Rilke and Ovid:Just as a white summer cloud, in harmony with heaven and earth freely floats in the blue sky from horizon to horizon following the breath of the atmosphere-in the same way the pilgrim abandons himself to the breath of the greater life that...leads him beyond the farthest horizons to an aim which is already present within him, though yet hidden from his sight.-Lama GovindaSpiritual...

Product Description

An unforgettable spiritual journey through the Himalayas— now celebrating its thirtieth anniversary

IN 1973, Peter Matthiessen and field biologist George Schaller traveled high into the remote mountains of Nepal to study the Himalayan blue sheep and possibly glimpse the rare and beautiful snow leopard. Matthiessen, a student of Z en Buddhism, was also on a spiritual quest—to find the Lama of Shey at the ancient shrine on Crystal Mountain. As the climb proceeds, Matthiessen charts his inner path as well as his outer one, with a deepening Buddhist understanding of reality, suffering, impermanence, and beauty. Top to learn more

In the autumn of 1973, the writer Peter Matthiessen set out in the company of zoologist George Schaller on a hike that would take them 250 miles into the heart of the Himalayan region of Dolpo, "the last enclave of pure Tibetan culture on earth." Their voyage was in quest of one of the world's most elusive big cats, the snow leopard of high Asia, a creature so rarely spotted as to be nearly mythical; Schaller was one of only two Westerners known to have seen a snow leopard in the wild since 1950.

Published in 1978, The Snow Leopard is rightly regarded as a classic of modern nature writing. Guiding his readers through steep-walled canyons and over tall mountains, Matthiessen offers a narrative that is shot through with metaphor and mysticism, and his arduous search for the snow leopard becomes a vehicle for reflections on all manner of matters of life and death. In the process, The Snow Leopard evolves from an already exquisite book of natural history and travel into a grand, Buddhist-tinged parable of our search for meaning. By the end of their expedition, having seen wolves, foxes, rare mountain sheep, and other denizens of the Himalayas, and having seen many signs of the snow leopard but not the cat itself, Schaller muses, "We've seen so much, maybe it's better if there are some things that we don't see."

That sentiment, as well as the sense of wonder at the world's beauty that pervades Matthiessen's book, ought to inform any journey into the wild. --Gregory McNamee Top to learn more

Easy upgrade from Tiger
I surfed around for the Snow Leopard upgrade from Tiger, and found the best price on Amazon. Installing Snow Leopard from Tiger was easy and it did not take very long. Apple makes Tiger owners buy the MacBox which includes IWork and ILife that I did not really need or want yet. The apple people say it is so everything is updated together, but to me it is just a way to charge more money. But when you buy all 3 together the package is less expensive than buying separately. The issue for me was simply that I did not want or need IWork and Ilife, but apple makes it so Tiger users have no choice but to buy all three if they want to use Snow Leopard. But check your Tiger processor to make sure your Tiger is compatible. Having said all this, I am very happy with Snow Leopard. The only difference between Leopard and Snow Leopard is speed. There are no new programs in Snow Leopard that Leopard already has. But Snow Leopard certainly has more bells and whistles than Tiger did so I...

Solid upgrades to OS and key apps
We have a nearly new iMac with only the basic Apple software on it. We decided it would be a great candidate for the upgrade to Snow Leopard, iLife 09 and iWork 09.Snow Leopard installed flawlessly, then I ran Software Update (it installed OS X 10.6.1) and repaired permissions in Disk Utility just to be safe.Next I loaded the DVD for iLife 09 and the beachball of death came up. The machine froze. When I rebooted, the iMac never got past the white screen... not even the Apple logo showed up. I had to force eject the DVD to get the machine to boot again.Next I installed iWork 09 and that went flawlessly. So I tried installing iLife 09 again and this time it worked. Ran software update again and it installed an update to iLife 09. But when I rebooted the iMac, once again it got stuck on the initial white screen (there was no DVD in the tray). I waited 30 minutes to no avail. It took 3 rebooting attempts to finally get the thing to boot and it seems to...

Where Can I buy Snow Leopard

All this time the only reason for my confirmed support was because I'd purchased the Apple Snow Leopard disk - even that purchase only provides a set time frame for free support.  At this point my nerves were on edge again as another issue that had raised its ugly had post Snow Leopard installation was my new found inability to back up data.  It transpires Snow Leopard doesn't comply with much third party software or hardware.  Yet within three days I'd picked up my new baby and had a one-to-one session (something else these Apple people suggest you purchase) to see everything had wonderfully and magically restored itself on the new shiny machine.  But the Apple store was packed and after just under two hours of discussing my needs, the issues with my MAC and with the kids taking turns in having screaming tantrums (I'm not blaming them and the need for me to rush things along) and the next...  Then the printer worked although I had to print one page at a time and each page took a random amount of time to print - unbelievably around two hours.  Even so, they told me the life of my machine was not a long one and certainly wouldn't last the time a brand new machine would last.  The clever people led me to believe it would be so much hassle that perhaps the purchase of a brand new computer and even a new printer may be cost effective.  But after my one-to-one lesson a lovely man with a hidden blue T-shirt (the robot staff are not  Fortunately I did not buy a new printer.

Users can then purchase and upgrade to OS X Lion for $30, as opposed to having to buy Snow Leopard for $30 and then buy the Lion upgrade for another $30. Apple has begun notifying MobileMe users that there is a new upgrade program available for users of older versions of OS X, offering a free copy of OS X Snow Leopard. then, after Snow Leopard is installed, they can upgrade to Lion to gain full use and access to iCloud. Apple will then ship the user a Snow Leopard DVD.
