Two words: Holy basil!
I'd been suffering from stress-induced anxiety and had been considering treatment with an anti-depressant as a last resort...but I was not looking forward to the inevitable and uncomfortable adjustment period, especially over the holidays. My longtime acupuncturist had me try one of these capsules at my appointment last week -- I allowed the capsule to break in my mouth, and felt the subtle calming, uplifting effects almost immediately. This is not to say that it will work for everyone with anxiety or depression disorders...but it's definitely helping me through a difficult time. I cannot vouch for other manufacturers of this item; I do know New Chapter to be a reputable company offering high-quality products.

I can breathe and relax again
I am in the midst of studying for some licensing exams and with it comes some stress and anxiety. I find pretty debilitating and wanted to take some supplements to support me during this time.I was muscle tested (kinesiology) on Holy Basil and it came out strong.I was advised to put the capsule in my mouth and bite it. Swallow the oil and allow the effects to wash over me. It's almost instantaneous. I feel calm, relaxed, and mellow. I don't feel sleepy or disoriented, just more balanced. It's a very gentle feeling, which lasts the whole day.If I were to compare it to anything else, I would say its sort of like GABA. However, GABA is much stronger in its effects for me. I use this occasionally to relax, and I even have Holy Basil tea that dos the trick too.The only thing I discovered is that I could NOT take the daily recommended amount. My body would not absorb it all along with the other nature's way produce I take and my urine would be almost neon yellow, so I only take 1 maybe two a day, but not with anything else. I alternate days that I take Holy Basil and other aruvedic medication.I have felt relaxed and less stressed after taking these pills, but I do recommend doing other things, such as yogo, meditation, stretching, or anything else you like along with taking these and you should be feeling pretty good. Okay folks this stuff works great but as I found out you have to be careful when taking this with Rhodolia which also has MAO-A activity, otherwise effects could be multiplied. (Had no clue that Basil was almost as powerful as Rhodolia in this department.)I have investigated MAO-A inhibitors somewhat for when I was using Anti-depressants before. I knew about the contraindication when it came to using it with SSRIs or Tryclics Anti-depressants but I had no clue it could also possibly interact (even in smaller doses) with other "Pro-drugs" that mimic and act on 5-HT receptors (seratonin).In my opinion the effects of Holy Basil are a little less harsh than Rhodolia which signifigantly changes the body's chemistry. Both give you the feeling of "blunt force impact" which is what I use to describe the sensation of a drug that sedates your body's nerve receptors but not necessarily your brain. Holy Moly Holy Basil!
I ordered Organic India's Tulsi Holy Basil last week, and began taking it yesterday. I took only one capsule yesterday, and man, did I ever have energy. I also felt more relaxed, which was lovely. I don't remember a time I felt relaxed before. I ordered direct from the company, having not thought about Amazon carrying the product. I have to say the bottle I ordered came wrapped very well in bubble wrap, inside a box full of packing. The box was clearly marked with "GLASS" and there was no damage anywhere.I realize that having only taken the product twice I can't say for sure it will continue working for me. However the friend that recommended it to me has been using it for quite some time, and she swears by it. Originating from India and known as Ocimum sanctum, holy basil or sacred basil because historically it was regarded as a sacred herb and used for decorating temples. Like all basils, holy basil will branch out when pruned correctly. I have a large holy basil plant growing in my pavement garden (in a warm climate with no frost) and it can get very woody by the end of the summer, so needs to be pruned back quite severely.
