Most informative book ever on the history of German beer.
I purchased this book because of my love for all types of beer. I have always been fascinated by the stories behind German beers. I had never realized, until I read this book, how each individual style evolved on its own and the politics behind it. I have purchased three additional copies of "Prost" to give as gifts to my friends who truly appreciate a great beers and the stories behind them. The author is both technically and intellectually competent, and surprisingly well written for someone whose native language is German. I would like to have, if given the opportunity, the pleasure of meeting him and meeting him and autographing my book.

THE definitive Beer History
A micro-brewer lent us his copy, and we immediately ordered one for us. It is a "must have" for beer lovers. It presents wide-ranging information about the history and manufacture of beer in a most engaging style. A definite page-turner!

Pass the beer
I found this book to be very fascinating. I am not a big beer drinker myself but I found the history and information in this book to be interesting. First I did not know that beer and European history were so intertwined. I also did not know much about the brewing of beer or what the difference was between ale and lager. Now that I have read this book I am more interested in trying to find the right beer for me. I look forward to reading more of Horst's books.

Text is great, info a little outdated.
This book was published in 1992, you can get just about anything these days as far as ingredients, and equipment is so much better. With that said, the history and text on Weizen bier is excellent. Take note the line about "never" put a lemon slice or any other fruit in your weiss bier, it would be an insult to the Bavarian brewer, prost to that one Eric ! Of the many times I've been to Germany only in the recent past have the bar tenders been offering a lemon slice due to the demand of tourists. Read this book and learn about a great bier.

Very good text for the all-grain brewer.
As with all the books I have read in the Classic Beer Styles series, Warner's book on German Wheat Beer is excellent. Warner interestingly details the characteristics and classic processes used in brewing German Wheat Beer, and includes recipes for the various styles of Wheat Beer. A must read for anyone serious about brewing this style.

Great Music in the Spirit of Oktoberfest
As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for CD's of good Oktoberfest music. In this particular CD, all of the songs are played by the German Air Force Band and are taken from another CD entitled, "More German Military Marches & Polkas - Vol. II." As you might expect, most of the selections are not--strictly speaking--Oktoberfest numbers. However, they are played and sung in the light-hearted, breezy manner typical of Oktoberfest. In addition, the band and singers give top-notch performances. So, as a CD of Oktoberfest-like music, I give this product high marks. It would probably make great background music for any Oktoberfest.

Almost the same as Munich
I've been to Munich twice now for Oktoberfest. While this stein feels identical to the real deal, it isn't. It's a great replica.However, I'm not a fan of the cheap HB sticker on it. Also, there is no manufacturing origin on the glass. It looks like "Made in something" was on the bottom, but it was dremeled out or something.I really need to get a real one back from the fatherland.

Do you like german beer?
Do you like german beer? If you do, get this book. This is the recipe key for that famous blond beer served in Bavaria. If you like the red beer, then get the book on octoberfest beer (marzen). This book will help you formulate a tasty, balanced, perfectly malty brew that is delightful. Fifty percent of my brews are helles beers, and once you get them right, I think yours may be too. For the most authentic taste, I recommend incorporating decoction mashing. This subject is not covered in this text, but is in a book titled: NEW BREWING LAGER BEER.Don't forget to drink to the foam (safely) and dance to merry music with a partner! Have fun. My favorite book in this series.
The various books in the Classic Beer Style series are as mixed of a bag as their subjects. While each makes an effort to provide a bit of a history lesson, some technical background and a few recipes for the homebrewer, each author seems to have been pretty much left to work out the details. As a result, some examples got lost by being muddled with too much history, too many technical details or recipes that are at the extremes of the complexity scale. Dornbusch managed to get a great balance of the three in this book, and he presents it in a style that shows that he downright enjoys his subject. The result is a book that, from a homebrewer's standpoint, is actually fun to read. But most importantly, you can make some pretty good brews from his recipes.

Having spent many nights in the Spaten and Augustiner beer halls this is a good book which reviews the style well. As I type this, the malt is undergoing the "acid rest", as I am Brewing the first recipe today. This is another good book from this series and useful source of information for the collection. I did have to order direct form the USA as it doen't appear to be available in the UK.

I will even have a course at the University about German history from 1945 an onwards. This is my favorite course so far because it is for foreigners and we will watch and discuss a German movie each time. There is not much to worry about when you are in an International exchange program like Erasmus because there are a lot of other people in the same situation and a lot of activities and chances to get to know each other. I am Julia Brunngård Haglund and at the moment I am doing an Erasmus exchange term in Bremen, Germany , for my fourth term of the European Program at the University of Gothenburg. So for a student from Scandinavia, Germany is great and it is a great feeling not constantly having to think about whether you can afford to treat yourself to something.
