Good grief, this is EPIC
I guess it depends on your point of view regarding the mixes found on this collection. If you're like me who's actually listened to the Doors for these past forty years, then you'll probably welcome these "new" versions with open arms. If you're a younger person who missed it the first (or second) time around and are more into "audiophile" integrity of the band, then I would suggest you pass on this or the individual albums that have all been re-released.Life is way too short to worry about such nonsense. This is a very inexpensive expansive collection of tunes by one of the best bands to ever grace a stage.Take a deep breath, make the purchase.....and enjoy yourself.

An excellent primer/good "digest" for dedicated fans
If, like me, you've been a Doors fan since high school, but never an "uberfan", you've probably had more than one of the studio albums and probably one of the anthologies/best ofs, etc. By first wife sto-, er, "permanently borrowed" and/or sold my copy of "LA Woman" (ironic, hunh?) and one of the anthologies. Now the discs that were "ex-wife'd", were discs made BEFORE the Industry decided there was a huge vein of gold to be mined by "remasters". So I've been able to replace long-lost discs without spending unnecessarily on albums I already have. (Even ex's have their uses, I suppose.)If you are a newb to the Doors, this collection is not only a great deal (39 tracks for $15), it sounds great. It has all of the "great" songs which made the Doors legends; tho' I agree only the most casual of fans isn't going to have some quibble with all the choices of any anthology (by any band). You're still encouraged to buy, at the very least, "L.A. Woman" if...

After all these years
This one is still a terrific album. I had the double-cd version 25 years ago, loved it then and I love it now. DRM-free amazon music is awesome. If you are a hard-core Doors fan you won't be even looking at this, but if you love classic rock and "like" the Doors, this is the only album you need.

The ups and downs of this remixed album
This remixed debut album is supposedly the correct speed after decades of being mastered at a slower speed. Apparently, only the 45 RPM single of Light My Fire was the only record off this album cut at the correct speed, but every subsequent release has actually been a little too slow. Inside the 1st album remixed CD there is be an explanation by Bruce Botnick stating why this is so. That really piqued my curiosity.I have also previously owned most of the Gold CDs, 1988 releases, and 1999 remasters. I have listened to the 1999 remasters and compared them to the 1988 remasters. The 1988 releases were tinny and flat sounding, while the 1999 version of this album was rich and full. I have also compared both of them with this 2007 remix. Clearly, this remix is the way to go. I CANNOT SAY THE SAME FOR THE DOORS REMIX ALBUMS AFTER STRANGE DAYS. After that, they sound waaaaay different which is not what I am pursuing. Some of you probably want a different sound and that's fine...

A Doors Fan from Florida
I always thought the studio version of "Light My Fire" (my favorite song of all time) would sound a little bit better IF ONLY the speed was a little faster, like many of the great live versions (Live at the Hollywood Bowl CD, Alive She Cried CD, Live at the London Roundhouse, etc.). I was totally unaware that the song actually WAS mixed slower on the original album. This explains why I thought the song sounded even better when it was played back slightly faster, such as on a variable speed record player.Fast forward to March, 2007. I receive an e-mail from Amazon.com, telling me I can purchase The Doors separately from "Perception" (the box set). I also found out that the CD was re-mixed at its proper speed, thanks to a university professor of music, who notified Bruck Botnick (long-time Doors' engineer and sound mixer) regarding the speed of the original recording.Since I have almost all The Doors studio and live albums, my main interest was in listening...

THE DOORS, first released in January 1967, is one of rock music's most famous debuts. It hit #2 in Billboard®, and delivered the #1 signature smash "Light My Fire" plus "Break On Through," "The Crystal Ship," and "The End." In-depth essay by Ben Fong-Torres (a principal Rolling Stone writer during the Doors heyday). Three bonus tracks include alternate takes of "Moonlight Drive" and a previously unissued version of "Indian Summer." Top to learn more

On their 1967 debut album, the Doors more than fulfilled the promise of their infamously challenging gigs around Los Angeles throughout the previous year. Whether belting out a standard like "Back Door Man" or talk-singing such originals as "The Crystal Ship" and "I Looked at You," leather-clad vocalist Jim Morrison exuded both sensuality and menace. The mixture, on the outsize album finale, "The End," helped rewrite the rules on rock song composition. None of this would have worked, though, were it not for the highly visual instrumental work of keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robbie Krieger, and drummer John Densmore, whose work on tracks such as "Take It As It Comes" and the lengthy hit "Light My Fire" virtually defined the rock-blues-jazz-classical amalgam that was acid-rock. --Billy Altman Top to learn more

New Isn't Always Better
Now this is a frustrating release. Up to now, all releases of this album has been a bit too slow and this CD thankfully corrects that. The band sounds more youthful and charged while plowing through their seminal debut. But there's a catch; this is not the original mix either. The surviving Doors and engineer/producer Bruce Botnick have taken it upon themselves to completely remix the album. It's more like a modern mix now, and the sound is clearer and punchier. Unfortunately, this also does away with the creepy, compressed atmosphere that was a trademark of the original mixes. The balance has swung away from the psychedelic into more typical classic rock territory. As is common with more modern mixes, the drums are also more front and center. It's fun to hear John Densmore's creative and musical drumming clearly, but it obscures the rest of the band more than I'd like. After hearing this, I have trouble listening to the original mix's slightly...

Fantastic song from a fantastic band!
I downloaded this song, and am very happy with the quality of the sound. Sometimes, places decrease the quality of the song (it becomes garbled or otherwise not clear/crisp) to save time/energy/memory. Not so with this download. Plus, the song is just awesome. The Doors wrote a wonderful song, when they came up with "Riders On The Storm." I am fully satisfied.

The Doors Masterpiece
For all reading this review I am referring to the March 2007 re-release of this milestone album. It was remastered and remixed as part of the 4oth anniversary Doors celebration. In the liner notes it is stated that the remaing Doors used the original master tapes, and remixed them to reveal subtleties not revealed in any previous release of this cd (They've done the same for all six studio albums) . The result is astounding. Morrisons voice cuts you like a knife, Manzareks keyboards are front and center, and you can hear the details of Kriegers' very focused playing. Certain songs have extra time on them. For example, the fade on "Love Her Madly" extends a bit more, and you hear a previously unreleased part of the original intro to "LA Woman". The sheer clarity of the recording reveals that "Riders on the storm" is even errier than when we first heard it back in 1971. This release of LA Woman is THE definitive version for anyone who loves the Doors. It's a rock/blues drenched...

The near-definitive version of an essential album
It's getting annoying, isn't it -- the endless parade of rereleases, remasters, and repackagings designed to bleed music fans with the promise of something new from a long-gone band?Reluctantly, I checked this album out on a streaming service. I wasn't about to part with another dollar to re-re-re-buy this middle-aged album without a good reason. I had the thing on vinyl, for cripes' sake. Then two CD versions, including the "Perception" box set... and now this.If you don't own a version of this album, and if you like the Doors at all, you must jump on this. And even if you do own a previous version, this edition is well worth it.Why? Well, if you don't own this album, you're missing a major shift in the Doors' direction, from sinuous adolescent psychedelia to boozy desert blues. It's not an easy shift for the listener to make; it took me easily 20 years of Doors fandom to really come around to this album after cutting my teeth on the poppy "Waiting...

The Doors finest album
The Doors final album with Jim Morrison (they would go on to record two more albums as a trio), remains their masterpiece and belongs in every rock collection. From start to finish, the album is brilliant. It was the Doors at their absolute best. The Doors previous albums ranged from very good to classic, but their sixth album "L.A. Woman" was their crown jewel. It's common for most bands to start out playing the blues and then evolve into a musical style/idenity all their own. In this sense, the Doors sort of evolved backwards. They started out playing crazy, psychedelic music, and then ended their career playing the blues."L.A. Woman" is a very bluesy album. It's not pure blues (B.B. King, Leadbelly), but it's rock tinged with blues. The band never sounded better. To be sure, the Doors albums were always terrific, but they sounded most at home with the blues. Playing blues rock brought out the best in all the Doors members. Ray Manzarek (organ) and Robby...

Product Description

Fans of iconic rock band THE DOORS are in for something special. The group s final album--1971 s L.A. WOMAN, with the signature hits L.A. Woman, Love Her Madly and Riders On The Storm --is being celebrated with a special two-CD release from Rhino.

The L.A. WOMAN 40th anniversary edition (Rhino 2-CD) features a never-before-heard song, She Smells So Nice, which captures the band--organist RAY MANZAREK, guitarist ROBBY KRIEGER, drummer JOHN DENSMORE and late singer JIM MORRISON--joyfully barreling through a full-throttle original before segueing into the blues standard Rock Me. As the song closes, Morrison can be heard chanting, Mr. Mojo Risin --an anagram of his name that was made famous during the bridge of L.A. Woman. The track was recently discovered by producer Bruce Botnick while reviewing the L.A. WOMAN session tapes.

In addition to She Smells So Nice, the second disc of the L.A. WOMAN reissue includes eight never-before-heard versions of songs from the album. Alternate takes of L.A. Woman, Love Her Madly and Riders On The Storm offer a fresh view on this landmark album, which was the group s sixth straight Top 10. The studio chatter between the songs is a revelation, transporting listeners to The Doors Workshop: the West Hollywood rehearsal space where they recorded the album with Botnick. One segment in particular captures a fascinating moment of inspiration when Morrison suggests they add the now-iconic thunderstorm sound effects to the beginning of Riders On The Storm.

Rhino will also release L.A. WOMAN: THE WORKSHOP SESSIONS, a double LP featuring all of the previously unreleased material found on the CD collection on three sides of vinyl, with the fourth side featuring a laser etching of the original "Electric Woman" art originally included with the L.A. WOMAN album.

Mr. Mojo Risin : The Story of L.A. Woman (Eagle Rock Entertainment DVD/Blu-ray) is told through new interviews with MANZAREK, KRIEGER and DENSMORE as well as Elektra Records founder JAC HOLZMAN, original manager Bill Siddons, engineer/co-producer Bruce Botnick and others. The high-definition video also features live and studio performances as well as rare archival photos. This fascinating documentary contains rare footage of THE DOORS in the studio and on stage. The documentary was made with the full involvement, approval and cooperation of THE DOORS.

The Year of The Doors will be marked by other special releases, with details to be announced soon.

L.A. WOMAN marked THE DOORS swan song, as MORRISON would pass away a few months after its release. At the time, Rolling Stone s Robert Meltzer called it The Doors greatest album...A landmark worthy of dancing in the streets (5/27/71). The first band to release eight consecutive platinum albums, THE DOORS were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007. The last official Doors studio album, L.A. Woman was still high on the charts when, like the "actor out on loan" of its closing track, "Riders on the Storm," Jim Morrison died in a Paris bathtub in the summer of 1971. Via such tracks as "The Changeling," "Crawling King Snake," and the frothy, rollicking title track, the collection leaned heavily toward the blues--in particular, Morrison's boastful "Lizard King" brand of it. It also holds another entry in the band's ever-adventurous tone poems in the ever-underrated mythical tale of American music and culture, "WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)." --Billy Altman Top to learn more

No One Here Gets Out Alive
I was in high school when The Doors' debut was released and it remains the one essential album to have in The Doors' catalog. [Although LA Woman and Morrison Hotel are nearly as good.] If you're looking to expand your collection beyond that, this two-disc collection is a no-brainer. It contains all eight Top 40 hits from their all too brief 4-year history and enough key album cuts ("The End," "L.A. Woman," "Roadhouse Blues") to satisfy all but the die-hard fan. [Thankfully, there are no tracks included from either of the two post-Morrison albums released in the early Seventies.]While the identity of The Doors is linked almost exclusively to the persona of its frontman, there's no denying Ray Manzarek's keyboards and Robby Krieger's guitar playing and songwriting as crucial to The Doors' sound. And Jim Morrison's power as a vocalist was his voice, which would make the listener ignore the sometimes pretentiousness of his lyrics. My only real...

Morrison's Magnetism Prevails
A terrific retrospective of one of the most enigmatic rock groups ever, "The Best of the Doors," opens with "Break On Through," then takes you on a wild ride through nineteen cuts that illustrate just exactly why this is such an enduring group. Jim Morrison's mesmerizing vocals, Robbie Krieger's "bottle neck" guitar, Ray Manzarek's keyboards and John Densmore's drums combined to create a unique sound, later imitated, but never duplicated by anyone else since. The songs included on this two-disc album open the doors that lead you into the ethereal, sometimes spiritual world of Morrison's poetry. His use of imagery and metaphor is remarkable, especially on such cuts as "Light My Fire," "The Crystal Ship," "People Are Strange," the impassioned "When The Music's Over," the subtly disquieting "Riders On The Storm," and the quintessential Door's song, the spellbinding "The End." Then there's the hard-driving "Roadhouse Blues," and "L.A. Woman;" the admonishing "Five To One;"...

18 Tracks Just Isn't Enough
As I stated in my review for "Legacy: The Absolute Best", no collection will truly ever encompass the best work of The Doors. However, there are still some that are definitely worth owning. "The Best Of The Doors", an imported two cd set, isn't.The reason that this collection gets three stars is because it is The Doors, one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever and music pioneers. There's some true rock classics here, such as "Light My Fire", "Break On Through (To The Other Side)", "The End", "Hello, I Love You", "Touch Me", "Love Her Madly", "L.A. Woman" and the chilling "Riders On The Storm". These are just some of the highlights. The fact is, 18 tracks just isn't enough to cover The Doors. And while all the stuff on here is brilliant, there's some excellent stuff left off. For example, their brilliant reworking of Willie Dixon's classic "Back Door Man", one of their best known album tracks, is strangely omitted. Similarly, classics like "Not To Touch The...
