Best Sewing Magazine Available
NOTE: This is the English language version of the magazine.Burda Style is really a beautifully laid out fashion magazine that includes all the patterns so that you can make everything shown in it yourself. Each issue has at least 40 regular size clothing patterns for women. The patterns have to be traced and the seam allowances added in, but you can easily modify them this way and it is still easier than drafting them yourself. Burda patterns are the most fashion forward and best fitting patterns available and Burda is much more technically advanced than the American pattern companies.Unique fashion accessories and home decorating projects are presented in a DIY format in every issue. The magazine ventures beyond sewing with original crochet, knitting, and craft project patterns. Recent issues of Burda Style for example featured a rug that you can crochet, a blanket and pillow to knit, a Fair Isle ski sweater to knit and smocking techniques for a...

Great Gift!
This was renewed as a gift, for an avid sewer, and she requests it each year because the patterns are very stylish, clearly written, and even when the article is complicated, she learns a lot about sewing from it.

Great for Sewers!!
I have been using Burda magazine patterns for several years. The plus sizes are actually made for plus sizes and not just graded up. The patterns fit real women, not just models. The instructions assume you know sewing basics, since they teach sewing in Germany in school, not like the States--the only drawback. But they do have one pattern per issue where they walk you thru--so if you are a beginner or need a refresher course, you can start with that pattern. You do have to trace out the pattern from the center sheets before cutting, but you have to do that with all sewing magazines. The photos give you several looks on real models, not just sketches, so you have an idea how the item will look when you are done. Try to get the magazine in your native language, because there are sewing hints even next to the photos, to help you achieve the look, including the fabric and trim they used. Some times they have crafty items--not my cup of tea. January 2011 has small children...

2 years ahead of the fashion curve! Light years ahead of ordinary plus size fashion!
I just reviewed Burda Moden, and much of what I said there applies here too.First off, I'm a plus size lady.I sew, and I love Burda magazines. Till recently I had an annual subscription and I need to refresh my subscription again. I always but always subscribed to both the regular magazine (which has a plus size section!) and the Plus magazine (which NEVER duplicates what you see in the regular one).If given a choice I think I'd take the Plus magazine if I couldn't afford both. Here are some helpful tips on why you might like to subscribe EVEN IF YOU DON'T SEW, and how to do so if you are out of the States area. For Canadians there is a Burda magazine reseller, and it will cost about 10$ Canadian per issue. Which is MUCH less than a normal pattern now. So it saves you on patterns.Burda has ways to subscribe for each country, just go to their website and click till you get the reseller for your own area...

I'm a Believer!
I ordered back issues of this magazine from an Ebay dealer in the UK after the Spring 2006 issue came out and I am sold not just on Burda Plus but on Berlin fashion designers as well- the women, anyway, make lovely, flowing but not "girly" clothes that are very wearable - Think Eileen Fisher or Flax but with darker, richer colors, fibers and textures, slightly more "fit" and more interesting shapes in a wider variety -- not just the same few repeated again and again. Clothes for the decades, not the season -- and the patterns are HERE! at least some of them, from designers like Evelyn Brandt, Doris Strietch (and another Berliner (female) whose name escapes me at the moment, but whose clothes I deeply admire.)The fit is better than most American pattern companies - especially pants. If you make one garment from each issue the subscription has more than paid for itself. Good info on sizing patterns up or down in the back issues I recently received - keeping the...

wonderful patterns
Contrary to the previous review, the majority of the patterns in the Fall/Winter 2005 issue were normal sizes (5'6"). This particular issue contains 10 jackets (two of which were for petites), four skirts (one of them petite), three pants (one petite), and four shells (two petites). There were no dresses and no blouses with sleeves. The interesting fabric choices and the superb fashion photography were also excellent. This particular issue also had an article on how to change a petite pattern to a regular pattern and vice versa. The pattern pieces have unique sophisticated shapes, very interesting for the intermediate to advanced sewer. One thing I did find lacking was there was no casual sportswear. The magazine seems geared toward business suits and formal occasions.

Nice magazine, bad service.
I received it before the expected date- so far I got just first issue. It is the same magazine my friends are getting in Russia- I love it!!!August issue is missing for two weeks now. I contacted manager twice- no response.

Burda is Burda
What more is there to say? If you are buying this, you probably already love and trust this magazine. Not every issue is excellent, but all of them have a variety of styles and difficulties, so there is something for everyone. If I could make everything I have marked in my mom's Burda magazines over the last 2 years, I would never need to buy clothes again. The reason I am giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because their offerings for the plus-sized women are pretty unflattering as a rule - I would put it at about 8 out of 10 that are frumpy and would make someone look like they are trying to (unsuccessfully) hide their bodies. Well-fitting clothes are a must for every size, right?Additionally, Burda has a Health and a Food section in the back. The Health section tends to be fairly unoriginal and very Russian - not completely grounded in fact and over-the-top. The Food section is pretty great, especially when they have desserts, but I would recommend really reading the recipe...

Perfect Book For New Sewers
For the beginning sewer, I would rate this book 5/5, but for more advanced sewers I would probably rate it 4/5.I think this book is clearly laid out - the book starts by discussing important tools, how to read and trace patterns, grainlines and fabric, and basic sewing techniques. It then goes on to give very detailed instructions for a skirt, a blouse, a dress, a coat, and a bag. It includes three variations with instructions for each pattern, as well as photographs of lots of creative ideas for each of the five designs. The pattern pieces are included with the book, which is great. I really love the blouse, and I like elements of the coat, so I may make use of these patterns in the future. My overall impression is that this is the perfect book for someone who is interested in learning to sew clothes but doesn't have a lot of experience. The book outlines the essentials of sewing without getting too bogged down in the details. It emphasizes creativity...

Burda Has The Best Patterns
Fantastic value...5 Burda patterns are included, for that reason alone purchase this gem.The patterns are for a blouse, skirt, dress, coat and handbag. With different fabric choices you could conceivably create a beautiful and versatile modest-sized wardrobe from these patterns alone. The clothing shapes chosen are ingeniously universally flattering. The coat is fabulous and 'Audrey Hepburn' inspired. The skirt is A-line and can be easily modified to suit your height and preference of length. The blouse is pretty and feminine. The pattern variations offered are creative and inspiring. The lie flat binder design should be de rigueur for all craft books. With all the sewing basics and instructions included, this would make an excellent gift for a beginner seamstress as well.NOTE: The patterns are Euro sizes 32-46, which are US sizes 0-14.

Finally a modern, fashionable + easy-to-follow sewing book!
Finally! Sewing is no longer a thing of the past! I am new to sewing and saw this book online and ordered it right away because it stood out as being one of the only books with a refreshingly fashion-forward and modern take on sewing. Being a sewing novice myself, I was wary about learning to sew from a book-- but this one is special because it guides you all the way from setting up a sewing area, to threading a sewing machine, to sewing your first seam. The photos are awesome, the mood boards are beautiful and the illustrations are clean and sophisticated-- and Project Runway alum Alison Kelly designed the patterns!PLUSES: Clear and concise instructions, beautiful photography, packed with tips + tutorials, and the 5 paper patterns (included in the back of the book) are actually really cute!MINUSES: You have to trace the paper patterns onto new paper so you can add seam allowance and preserve the original pattern to use in later variations. This is time...

For the aspiring sewer
This is a quality magazine with a knowledgable staff. I have never been disappointed with an issue--each one has helpful tips that are explained in detail with examples, good graphical representation, and procedures. A while ago my father-in-law asked me how sewing machines worked, how the threads could connect to work at all, and lo and behold, the next issue of "Threads" explained that very concept in an easy-to-understand way. I like how this magazine covers so many different topics. For example, recent issues covered such items as choosing the proper sewing machine needle for your project, how to use the different feet that come with sewing machines, how to make the perfect button hole, which hems for which garment/fabric type. Some sewing magazines just focus on the fads, spending so much time on one subject (like machine embriodery--which would be helpful if I had one!) that those of us relatively new to sewing don't get the real tips and tricks that any sewer needs to...

not the Threads magazine of the past
I used to dream about subscribing to Threads and drool over them in the library, but the new format beginning in Fall 2005 is disappointing. They have added many more articles of interest to very new sewers such as how to choose the correct needle for a fabric. This basic info is readily available in many basic sewing books and it is not why I renewed to Threads for another 3 years. This magazine once showed cutting edge techniques and lots of projects that intermediate and advanced sewers could savor. As a beginning sewer I used to dream about conquering the exciting projects in Threads. Now, they have watered it down to appeal to less skilled people at the expense of the projects and information that made it stand out from other sewing magazines. This is still a "good" magazine, but no longer excellent. I wish that I could get back my money for the next 3 years and spend it on fabric.

Great sewing resource!
I have been sewing on and off for about 20 years and am always looking for ways to improve my sewing. I really like this magazine. Each issue contains instructions for several projects, but what I really like about this magazine is that it is full of tips and tricks that I can really use. Just as an example, my current issue (April/May 2011) contains articles on adjusting tension, working with knits, draping principles, pant fitting tips, fashion sketching and much, much more. This is a great all-around sewing resource that covers all aspects of sewing. This magazine seems to be mainly geared towards the beginner or intermediate sewer, but I think even an advanced sewer may find it useful.

Where Can I buy Burda Magazine

I enjoy painting a lot, it´s something I put my heart in and something I´d like to get better at. I used to make illustrations for two small magazines (only one now), and I make dolls out of clay. The most frustrating thing about sewing for me would be that I am almost never able to make anything exactly the way I wanted. It´s a great thing to think of a garment, a shape, a color you´d like to achieve… and then make it and wear it. Check out Janul’s 10 favorite member projects. But it is very expensive and my time is very limited, so I keep dreaming the dream… for now. Honestly, I fear having a child will take away all my sewing/creative time (I also enjoy drawing and painting…and dancing). I’m inspired, though, to see you make the time to be creative and artisitc even having 2 kids. I sewed a bit as a child and was interested in fashion design, but that started to fade after a few years. On the other hand, it´s very rewarding to be able to make something I love. I have an image of it in my head: pink, with a hood, slightly babydoll-ish, maybe a bit of a dufflecoat style, maybe something more fitted at the top and looser in the skirt. When I think about what to sew next, I often like to look at my favorites. Therefore I try to sew during the day, if possible, because in the evening I like to enjoy the quiet (tracing patterns etc. I’ve been interested in it, again, the past 5-6 yrs sewing when I have time. I also know exactly where I would buy the material.
