Perfectly Mellow Tea
I lived in Japan for 4 years so perhaps I was predisposed to like this sort of thing, but after trying it once at a Japanese restaurant, I was hook. I recently found this product and recommend it highly. One teabag makes a large pitch of this pleasant, mild tea. It's taste reminds me a bit of Sugar Smacks without the sugar, or even Sheerios. Doesn't sound like a good taste for tea you say? Well, you'd be suprised. A co-worker who tasted it said it reminds her of coffee, which I can see too.Recent studies have shown it has many health benefits, including the ability to improve the fludity of the blood. I'm not sure how that translates into overall well being, but I know that drinking it makes me feel healthy, and I enjoy the flavor. It may not be everyone's cup of tea (sorry, had to), but it is worth trying at least once I'd say. I have a container at work and I sip iced Barley tea throughout the day.

Healthy, natural, great-tasting caffeine free tea
The idea of boiling grain to make a tea never occurred to me. Surprisingly in Seoul, many restaurants serve barley tea, called bori-cha as their standard free beverage. Most of my Korean colleagues love it. It is a kind of cultural icon. Growing up with Honey nut Cheerios, I assumed that barley needs honey, so I added honey to my barley tea and it is to die for. My Korean colleagues consider this sacrilege, but I still recommend it.Barley tea is also popular in Japan and Ecuador. Apparently, we are behind in the discovery of this wonderful tea.The taste of barley tea is a bit like regular tea, say Lipton, but softer. Most importantly for me, this tea is healthy and natural. I don't drink coffee, black or green tea for health and personal reasons. Tea made from barley is healthy, refreshing and enjoyable. You must try some.

Easy and tasty!
If you like mugicha (barley tea), this stuff is great, and super easy! The teabags are pitcher-sized, so all you have to do is drop it in a pitcher of water and refrigerate it overnight, and you're done. (Use filtered water -- it makes a big difference.) I like it plain and think it tastes slightly sweet by itself, but I know people like to add sugar to it, too. Since it's caffeine free and calorie free and really refreshing when cold, it makes a great alternative to plain water for staying hydrated in the summer. I keep boxes of this stuff in my pantry all summer. My local Asian Supermarket also carries this product.

Product Description

House - mugicha (barley) tea - 16 large bags is a tisane made from roasted barley, which is popular in Japanese and Korean cuisine. It is also used as a caffeine-free coffee substitute. Green tea, chai tea and black tea are fine, but there is nothing like a nice tall glass of refreshing barley tea. It has a mild, slightly nutty flavor that doesn't require any sugar or lemon, and it has no caffeine. It has a toasty taste, with slight bitter undertones, but much less so than tea made from tea leaves. Top to learn more

Love it!
I love mugicha and am disappointed that it's so hard to find. It's great for our kids too -- a healthful alternative to sugary drinks. My former Japanese teacher said children and pregnant women in Japan drink it all the time.

Product Description

"Mugicha" or roasted barley tea is a traditional drink that has been a favorite for centuries in the Asian. Naturally caffeine-free, its mellow, soothing flavor can be enjoyed by everyone at any time of day. Served chilled in summer, it is delightfully cooling and refreshing. In winter, hot Mugicha is both warming and relaxing. To prepare warm Mugicha: Boil water pour over tea bag and steep for 15-25 minutes. To prepare iced Mugicha: pour iced water over tea bag in a pitch and shake. Or add 2 tea bags to 1-1.5 liter cold water and leave in the refrigerator overnight. Due to the barley content, it is normal to have some residue in the tea. Top to learn more

Wonderful Tea
I absolutely adore this tea, especially in the summer. It is very refreshing and caffine free. This is a nice large package to get you through the season since 1 bag makes about a gallon of ice tea. The service and shipping was fast...but I didn't get a free pack of Meiji Mini Candy with my order of 2 bags.

A great summer drink: sweet, nutty and caffeine free
Treat yourself to an excellent summer tea. Caffeine free with a naturally sweet and nutty taste, the tea can be brewed hot or cold. If this is your first experience with Japanese mugicha (barley tea), the large tea packet is the most common way it is sold. Our sons, ages 8 and 7, like mugicha. We don't buy Kool-Aid or other powdered drink mixes that require added sugar. Our family of four consumes at least a pitcher of the tea every day in the summer, so one package lasts about one month.Last summer, we purchased but it is currently unavailable at Amazon. It was good though, so I wrote a five-star review for that brand. The price was reasonable, less than $9.45 for 51 packs, or roughly 38 cents for a two-quart pitcher...

Barley tea, the perfect summer drink without calorie and caffeine!
Growing up in Japan, the major drink for summer was and still is cold barley tea. Unlike sweetened drink or soda, you won't get thirsty after drinking this refreshing tea! Roasted barley flavor doesn't interfere with any meals. You just drop one bag in cold water and leave it outside to make it like sun tea. Great way to quench your thirst during Summer (in our household, it's all year around), and it doesn't come with calorie or caffeine. Some prefer to drink this sweetened, and I sure did when I was a kid.

The taste of Japanese summer!
My wife and I lived in Japan and were always disappointed with the mugicha available in the states. This is great tasting mugicha and is so darn refreshing when the temp goes up. We also enjoy sharing it with our children as it is a caffeine free tea. Give it a try, just be sure to read the brewing directions if you haven't made it before.

Customer Review

Not Bitter at All
I have tasted several brands of barley tea. All of the following were cold brewed, including the one I bought here. One of them was a gift from Japan and wasn't roasted, so it wasn't bitter at all. One of them was roasted and VERY bitter. Another one was a mixture of lightly and deeply roasted and tasted okay (not very bitter). This one I am reviewing however, is excellent in taste. It isn't bitter at all, even after cold brewing for several days. The package says it is gently roasted in small quantities. That, plus the fact that it is organic, I believe is the reason it doesn't have the bitter taste. If you don't like bitter drinks and want to drink barely tea, this is a great choice.
