Perfect for elementary reports
The titles in 'A Class of Their Own' series provide excellent surveys for libraries interested in the six major classifications of living organisms based on the latest scientific data. Judy Wearing's BACTERIA surveys staph, strep and other bacteria while her FUNGI covers mushrooms, toadstools, molds and others, Shar Levine and Leslie Johnstone's ANIMALS surveys mammals, birds, reptiles and other animals and their PLANTS surveys flowering plants, ferns and other plants; David M. Barker's ARCHAEA covers salt-lovers and other types of archaeans, and Rona Arato's PROTISTS tells of algae and amoebas and other protists. All are perfect for elementary reports.

Great addition to anyone's science library. Well done!
Ms. Maczulak did an excellent job with this book. It's factually correct and well-written, making it both pleasurable and educational to read. That's really saying something, considering that college texts on the subject of microbiology have a reputation for being rather challenging to read and understand. It's not that those books are badly done, it's that the topic is complex. Ms. Maczulak removes the complexity to bring us a good overview of the role of bacteria in our lives and in the larger world around us. She exposes and corrects many myths, while also keeping her narrative in a framework that moves forward and helps the reader get "the big picture." Without crossing it, she walks the fine line between eye-glazing detail and enough detail to be a rich read. My eyes didn't glaze over once, during my reading of this book. When I started reading this book, I thought it would be a good academic refresher. Before I finished reading it, that thought changed...

A broad overview of microbiology today...
One of my concerns about science books for the general public has been that they tend to over simplify their subject. Science in these books seems to be little more than a set of facts presented in a shallow way. But this is not one of those books. This is a book for someone who knows some biology. This is not a simplified version of microbiology, but a very good and comprehensive overview of the field; perfect for someone with a good high school or college freshman bio course under their belt. It expects the reader to understand something of genetics, chemistry and cell biology, and is comfortable with the vocabulary. In places there seems to be a bit too much effort to state a series of facts, and the writing feels strained. I had the impression that the author had a specific page count limit to meet, and was trying to get as much material in as possible. Overall, I found the the coverage of microbiology exceptionally broad; the more of the book I read, the better it...

Product Description

Bacteria are invisible, mysterious, deadly, self-sufficient…and absolutely essential for all life, including yours. No other living things combine their elegant simplicity with their incredibly complex role: Bacteria keep us alive, supply our food, and regulate our biosphere. We can’t live a day without them, and no chemical, antibiotic, or irradiation has ever successfully eradicated them. They’re our partners, like it or not--even though some of them will happily kill us.

Allies and Enemies tells the story of this amazing, intimate partnership. Authored by Anne Maczulak, a microbiologist who’s hunted and worked with an extraordinary array of bacteria, this book offers a powerful new perspective on Earth’s oldest creatures. You’ll discover how bacteria work, how they evolve, their surprising contributions and uses, the roles they’ve played in human history, and why you can't survive without them. No form of life is more important, and in Maczulak’s hands, none is more fascinating.

Outlasted, outnumbered, outsmarted

They’ve been here four billion years--and they even outnumber you in your own body

How bacteria keep you alive…

…and how to keep them from killing you

“Humans Defeat Germs!”

But not for long…

The Invisible Universe

The stunning hidden relationships between bacteria and the rest of nature

Perfect for a High School Library
Don't take the title of my review as a slur, it's actually a complement. A sharp high school student wouldn't have a problem reading this book and an adult won't feel either talked down to or bored. Every student should read a book like this in school. I think a lot of people in general need to read books like this for a little perspective. When you're at the gym, at the mall, or at work, you'll see people putting on hand sanitizer after they touch anything and freaking out about germs. Watch some TV for a short time and you're bound to see some product that will protect your kids because it's antibiotic implying you're obviously a bad parent if you don't run out and buy it right now! Woo...the germs are gonna get ya! Well, no they're probably not. You have this thing called an immune system that tends to handle most of that kind of thing and it pre-dates these products by quite a while. That's not to say the stuff is useless, just that soap and water and avoiding...

The best in the series - high quality
I ordered the bacterial model along with the skin and virus models from this manufacturer. For the price, I expected tiny displays with the quality of a happy meal toy. I was pleasantly surprise to find a very quality item inside and a very decent size - feels much bigger than the little box it came in. The model can be taken apart to check out different areas. All parts are made of a soft, thick, and flexible vinyl that could easily be dropped or thrown against the wall often without it breaking. The tail is bendable and it is a very tactile model. It comes with an information booklet that is brief but informative. It also comes with a card that condenses the booklet's info and can be placed next to the model for reference. And it all comes in an attractive storage case. This is my favorite in the series - it stays together well, is large, and is very handleable. The only detractions I can find is that the stand itself is cheap thin...

At Last: A Guide to Charismatic Microflora!
Betsey Dexter Dyer has written a book in "A Field Guide to Bacteria" that, once it is opened, you wonder why no one has written before. The premise is so obvious that it seems to have been totally overlooked! Location, visual appearance, activity, smell and other characteristics that do not always require a high-powered microscope can be used to identify bacterial colonies! Fortunately the "wait" for such a book (which, until now, we probably did not even know we needed) has been worth it because Dyer has done an excellent job of writing it! In this book she introduces the reader to the teaming microflora of bacteria of earth in a way that cannot help but increase the number of people who appreciate these invisible true owners of the planet. The huge bacterial flora is well covered and the author's grasp of the multitudinous habitats where bacteria live and thrive, sometimes under the most extreme conditions, is impressive. Everything from sulfur bacteria,...

Brilliant concept, great execution, fun book
This fun and informative book starts with the brilliant idea of identifying bacteria by their MACROscopic field marks (colors, smells, effects) rather than by microscope. You would never believe how many bacteria one can identify by "field marks" alone, and readers will be surprised at how much fun the identification and discussion of bacteria can be. The author's execution of the guide -- her excellent and enthusiastic writing style and her choices of which bacteria to discuss -- makes this the rare field guide that one can read from cover to cover. The book discusses everything from bacteria in hot springs to those that make cheese or pickles, to those in animal intestines. There are beautiful (yes, beautiful) color plates, great suggested experiments, and guides to finding different kinds of bacteria. The author makes the subject interesting, funny and captivating -- and she uses exclamation points without irony! All in all an excellent book -- don't be scared off...

Excellent even for professional microbiologists
While this book is intended for the general public, and is certainly accessible to those without microbiological training, don't pass it up even if you have microbiological training -- in many ways it is a condensed version of Balows' _The Prokaryotes_, and likewise quite useful for reminding oneself what obscure groups of bacteria do "for a living". Of course, Dyer's book is a lighter, more amusing read than Balows', and chock full of the sort of anecdote that is fun to slip into a lecture -- such as the explanation of Charles Dickens' cryptic reference to a "bad lobster in a dark cellar" in _The Christmas Carol_, and the fact that the oddly named cyanobacterium _Nostoc_ was named by the alchemist Paracelsus! In addition, I was pleasantly surprised that despite identifying herself on the very first page as a former student of Lynn Margulis, Dyer doesn't try to defend her mentor's continued rejection of the discoveries of molecular phylogeny, but even goes so...

A comprehensive, reader-friendly introduction to the world of bacteria

When most people hear the word "bacteria" they think of food poisoning; infections; and acute, debilitating, or fatal diseases. Yet, while E. coli, strep, and other bacterial pathogens certainly cause their share of misery in the world, they are only a tiny portion of a vast universe of microorganisms—the most basic of life forms. Without them, nothing else could live or grow on Planet Earth. Bacteria: The Benign, the Bad, and the Beautiful introduces you to this diverse, microscopic world and explains the fundamental microbiological concepts you need to explore the life and behavior of bacteria. Even if you have no previous background in the subject, the book's clear, jargon-free language tells you what you need to know about:

  • The origins and evolution of bacteria

  • Some of the fundamental ways in which bacteria have shaped the world

  • Bacteria commonly found in the healthy human body

  • Antibiotics and the growing problem of resistance

  • Marine microbiology, bacterial toxins, and enzymes

  • Bacterial genetics and genomics

  • Bacteria that survive in extreme environments, such as boiling water

  • And much more

This comprehensive guide features custom-drawn, black-and-white illustrations by artist Karoly Farkas, and it illuminates its points through real-world examples and engaging stories. Discrete, topic-by-topic structure, text-box summaries of background science, and a helpful glossary make for quick and easy reference. Whether you are a science professional in need of information on bacteria outside of your specialty, a student in search of a solid introduction, or a curious reader looking for fascinating and reliable information, Bacteria: The Benign, the Bad, and the Beautiful is the resource you need.

This product works amazingly well for being a 'quick fix' for cycling, but make sure you SHAKE the bottle... shake it, shake it, shake it. Day 1 you'll (shake the dickens out of it) dump in a ton of the stuff as directed, by day 2 I've seen the ammonia spike that signifies the beginning of cycling. Day 3 it says you're done... and you have cycled the aquarium... ammonia and nitrite drop to zero and nitrate is at a safe level (under 5 ppm) by day 4 in my experience, but when you add fish, don't be surprised if you see a 'mini-cycle' where the ammonia and nitrite spike a bit. The tank and fish are fine but consult a forum or fish store if you're worried. One review on here stated they tried replacing all of their water to fix an algae problem?... not what this product is for. This runs through the 1-4 week process of initially cycling the tank within 3 days, doesn't make it impossible to make mistakes. I will say I have some reservations about the "immediate...

Cycle Is Good Stuff for My Pond!
I've used Cycle whenever I've had algae bloom problems (pea soup like water) in my pond and it has always done the trick of returning my pond water to clear! I have about a 1,500 gallon pond and I bought 2-67.5 oz bottles of Cycle just in case one bottle wasn't enough to do the trick, but 1 bottle was enough to give me 4 treatments and it was clear in a couple of days after my 2nd treatment! I did 4 treaments in about a weeks time, every other day. I have koi and plants in my pond and everything was fine. Great stuff!

It Doesn't Work As Advertised. But it is a good bio additive.
A bit of info about myself before my review, I've had aquariums since 1998 and so I know how to start/maintain one. I've had salt, fresh and brackish.Anyway, I started a new fresh water aquarium about two weeks ago, so I decided to give this product a try, having tried Seachem's Stability in the past, which by the way, does not work any miracles either. So after 3 days, I tested the water's parameters to see if this product truly does what it says it does, but, as I had suspected, it didn't work. Amonia was just under 0.25ppm, Nitrite and Nitrate was also present and pH was at 7.4. I know the pH is not even mentioned on the product's label, but I decided to mention it anyway. A good buffer like Seachem works to bring the pH to a neutral 7.0, but don't use any during the cycle, because the pH will be different during it and it should go back to normal on its own. The only time you should use products like Seachem pH is during water changes or for spikes.I...
