A must have!
One goal of mine this year was to become professionally certified in AutoCAD. I registered for the tests and purchased the AutoCAD 2012 Bible as my study guide. I am happy to say that I have passed both AutoCAD 2011 and 2012 associate and professional exams, in fact I did very well.The AutoCAD Bible is a great book and resource on all things AutoCAD. Most people that use AutoCAD need some form of formal training. Some people can get by with reading the manual. I for one was able to follow your AutoCAD 2012 Bible as if I was in a classroom. I was able to take your beginner instructions and my first project was completed within a hour.When I first received your book, I was a little bit overwhelmed by the shear volume of information. 2D or not 2D? That is the question!
I have been using LT for over a month now, and I'm more than happy with everything it offers, and everything it doesn't. The simple statement here is that if you do not need to render in 3D, LT is for you. As it is for me.Let's face it, LT is a slight step down, but for the money, it is quite the bargain for the steps it takes for you in professional drafting. Either way you look at it, you are playing with the big wigs because you can now speak their language. With full DWG compatibility, you are able to associate yourself and others with the most popular file format. If you are dealing with people with limitations, you are the one with the ability to provide previous formats for them to utilize, not the other way around. With LT you can use anything. And if the people you are providing any of this for have nothing remotely possible to use any of your creations, well, you simply export a PDF version, or even JPG and TIF images. A great 2D-only drafting option.
LT is the "light" version of AutoCAD. The main difference, is that it doesn't allow for 3D modeling. If you only need 2D modeling capability, it is a very viable alternative to the much more expensive full version of AutoCAD 2012. I've used both AutoCAD 2012 and AutoCAD 2011, and for the most part, they are a very effective way to add some power to your drafting, especially when you combine it with a lower-cost 3D modeling solution, of which there are many. I don't have to do much 3D design anymore, but when I do, I use .Install was pretty easy and although I have previous experience with AutoCAD, the layout is simple enough where first-timers can jump right in fairly quickly with minimal experience. I am very happy with this book.
I am a novice at using AutoCAD.Before ordering this book I have learned enough to do very basic 2d drawings of sail panels for Falcon Sails. [...]Now that I need to step up to 3d stuff, my just learn as I go approach does not work so well. I need to add to my knowledge base in a more structured way.So far, I have read 100 pages of this book starting with the more difficult 3d chapter.It is very well written. I rarely get lost and I am adding nicely to my autocad knowledge.I really like the way it assumes you know very little about the layout of autocad, and consistently describes each step in detail so you are not left searching around & get hung up on simple things. At the same time the consistency of process documentation allows you to breeze over the sentences you do not need.Even if you are an autocad expert, you may need this for a while when you step up from an older version of autocad.This book has had multiple... FINALLY I get Paper Space!!
This is a great guide for everyday users. The chapter on Paper Space and Model Space alone is worth the price (very reasonable) of this book. The author has a friendly style, excellent examples, and great puzzlers at the end of the book. Most AutoCAD books are either "tips" books or "how to" books. This one is for people who already know and use the software. I attended one of Dan's presentations at AutoDesk University, and the book is just as great as his workshops. Thanks Dan!!! A Great AutoCAD Resource
This book is a great source of tips and guidelines for any AutoCAD user, beginner or experienced. Dan's thorough explanation of the tabs and settings in the Options menu along with the recommendations for settings is worth the price of the book. The chapters on scripts and LISP will help anyone new to customization to start getting a grasp of how to use these tools to get AutoCAD to do be a more productive tool in their particular work environment. Old school tips for all users!
I've been a user of AutoCAD since release 10 (1991), at one time I used to purchase 2 to 4 reference books per AutoCAD release. I have not purchased a book on AutoCAD since AutoCAD 2000. Until now. Mr. Abbott's book is by far the best AutoCAD Productivity book on the market! If you have had formal or informal training for AutoCAD, or are a seasoned user of AutoCAD, get this book! Although Mr. Abbott packs this book full of real-world tips and tricks and enough examples to give one a good jump-start with customizing AutoCAD, my enthusiasm for this book is based on the fact that Mr. Abbott explains how and why AutoCAD works without being geeky. There's a reason why this is the CAD standard
My first experience with CAD software was with AutoCAD many years ago, but cost issues necessitated switching to other programs (mainly TurboCAD, but also CorelCAD). While these are capable tools and certainly offer a great value for the price, there is a reason why AutoCAD is considered by many to be the standard to which all other CAD programs are compared. It offers a huge array of tools, routines and capabilities that other programs just can't match. The downside is that this version (LT) is limited to 2D, and stepping up to the 3D version is a huge investment.Even though it is priced much below the "full" version, AutoCAD LT still comes at a price, both monetary as well as the type of system required. I initially put it on a somewhat modestly configured dual core XP SP3 laptop with minimal graphics capability. It ran, but you could almost draw freehand faster than the screen could update. In my opinion, AutoCAD LT 2013 (for PC) is not for Computer Aided Design (CAD) beginners. If you're not sure, download the free 30 day trial and see for yourself. Availing oneself of a free trial is generally good advice especially for expensive products. My review is based on downloading the fully functional trial version though I also received a DVD of the full version with the necessary activation code. The code can be entered in the trial software to fully activate it beyond the 30 day trial period, something I have successfully done. Reminder: this is 2D CAD software only. Buying AutoCAD through amazon really is a no brainer if you were planning to buy anyway. By going through Amazon you not only save time (their one-click buying option is awesome) but you also get a $450 savings on AutoCAD 2012. Plus depending on where your physically (where you live, many states/provinces will be tax exempt) buying AutoCAD from you probably won’t pay taxes on it as well. On amazon right now you can buy the full version of AutoCAD 2012 (comes with 1 year autodesk subscription as well) for $3,995.
Buy Solidworks and get back up to speed with latest version using a training class and some books OR buy AutoCAD and take a training class and get some books to learn it.
