great teaching and self study tool
I have been using this text to tutor adults in free GED classes for over a year. I like the format, clear and concise explainations,and the neat way study and skill tips are introduced in the lessons and at the end of tests. So far no one who has passed the practice tests in this book have failed to receive their GED certificate. I've looked at several other books and I am convinced the Steck-Vaughn products are the best on the market.

Excellent Book...My daughter did pass GED studying from it
My children are all home educated. My oldest is now 22 and decided she wants to study graphic arts at the local technical school. She needed the GED to get in. So we bought this book and for 2 weeks studied together for about 2 hrs. a day in the math section, for Math was always my daughter's weak area. I felt the math chapters were very well laid out and each concept presented carefully and clearly. The work even stretched my brain at times, for I haven't done high level "school math" for many years. But with the practice, my brain was refreshed and I could do it, and my "math phobic" daughter could too. In some areas, she was quicker at finding the answers than I was! I never took geometry in school, nor did my daughter study it at home, and we never knew how to find the length of the hypotenuse of a triangle ( we didn't even know what a hypotenuse was!), but I found the geometry so well explained it was easy, and I actually found that chapter quite fun! Excellent Study Guide
I can't imagine anyone who really studys this book failing the NEW GED. The book, while overwhelming in size, is easy to follow and does an excellent job in all five subject areas. Of the five 2002 GED books I use in my classroom, this is clearly the best.

GED Tutor
I tutor learning disabled adults for the GED. This book is by far the best. The language is simple and the instructions are great. They learn what they need to know to pass the GED with a decent score and are not overwhelmed with information that they do not need.

BEST RESOURCE FOR GED SUCCESS!!!
I am a vocational counselor helping adults return to school to learn a new career. Most have been out of school for 10-30 years. This tool helps them recover years of ability lost to non-use, but most especially to score much higher on their entrance exams to the colleges, which greatly reduce the number of remedial classes they have to take to bring their skills up enough to enter a degree program. In addition, those that dropped out of High School have been able to get their GED within as little as a week, or the time it takes to get scheduled into the local testing center (usually at your local Community College). It has been the single most important resource for nearly every student I have, and has proven its worth time and time again. You cannot lose with this one!

Parent-Friendly too
I bought the McGraw-Hill GED text for my 17 year old child. We decided that it was best for her to get a GED rather than through the traditional method of attending high school for reasons unrelated to this review.When the book arrived, I was a bit taken aback by this sheer size of it and somewhat concerned that my child would also be alarmed. However, upon reading through the text, I found it very straight forward and easy to follow. We review the chapters together and have set a goal of 2 full chapters per week - there are 30 individual chapters.In addition, I purchased the text with the optional CD ROM. It contains sample tests which can be taken either at your leisure or using the exam's timer. The sample tests appear somewhat similar in format as well as difficulty to what I took completing my CLEP exams (I'm not sure if that means colleges have been dumbed down or that students are smarter). At the very least, the practice exam format should be good...

Great!
This book covers EVERYTHING. But getting it and opening the box was daunting to see the sheer size of the over 1100 page book.Get the version with the CD-ROM. At the very least you can take the pre tests on the CD-ROM and it tells you in the results exactly where your weaknesses are and which pages of the book to cover. Without it I probably wouldve read the book cover to cover. With it, I found I can pretty much skip the science chapter (I haven't taken the other pre tests yet).I must say, some of the questions are probably more difficult than what the actual GED asks as Ive had some average friends go in and take the GED without any classes/studying after several years of being out of school and passed.

This is a great book for teachers, tutors and study groups. The book is obviously made up of fifty skills. Each skill is only a couple of pages long and offers practice with GED style questions. I like the book because the small bits of information make a quick review for students. A student can do one skill a day or a week and know exactly how much is left. I also like the book as an introduction to what students actually need. All too often students are overly concerned with fractions and not concerned enough about word problems and problem solving. The book keeps word problems and GED specific problem solving front and center in each skill.

Excellent Math Base
I bought this for my teen two years ago as he struggled with the math portion of the GED. He ended up scoring in the top 99% on that portion of the test; I am sure this book was at least 75% responsible for that.We approached his work in this book on a daily basis: one top skill a day for 50 days. Now, two years later, I've purchased a copy for my other teen. She's a wiz at math, but I want her to keep her math skills in check as she works more on the areas she is weaker in for the GED.(Incidentally, both my kids have opted out of high school, instead choosing to attend college at the ripe old age of 16. I've heard it's a trend in some school districts. With the number of calls I field from interested parents, it seems that it may become a trend here too.)

i was told that i’d be going to the ged plus program, i scored a 75 on the asvab and i chose 68W but i was told that i would be able to retake the asvab after i pass the ged test and i would be able to chose another job. If I was you, I would go ahead and ship since the GED Plus program is closed and choosing not to ship would throw that away, causing you to have to get a GED on your own and having to have at least 15 semester hours of college if you try again. Us army, citizenship, college fund, ged plus program questions. Once you are in the military, you can apply for citizenship after one year of service or after you spend one day in a combat zone, whichever one comes first. The only catch to TA is that if you fail a class or drop it for a non-military reason then you have to pay for the class you failed or dropped. also, my father says i should buy a watch before i go but he was in the korean military. answers: If they say the job is closed then that means it is closed to all NEW applicants. I however, am not sure how this stuff works so I cannot say if I am a dual citizen, or just a US citizen, or what. You could buy a watch but you really don’t have to unless your basic training company requires it. Your recruiter should have already gave you a list on what to bring. i’ve heard of people getting screwed over and getting jobs they didn’t want. If not, you are given the option of either choosing another job or not going at all if you haven’t shipped yet.

People looking for their GED scores are supposed to call Educational Testing Services, or ETS, the company the state uses to keep the records. We learned other people looking for decades-old GED records may also have trouble proving they took the test. It was a conditional enrollment, meaning Armstrong could enroll as long as she eventually produced her GED records. But her dreams were nearly crushed when she couldn’t get a hold of her GED records. If they didn’t buy it, and Armstrong didn’t, chances are ETS doesn’t have the records. Armstrong took the test at Modesto Junior College, which isn’t a testing center anymore. Koozer said people who took the test before that date had the option of buying their certificate, which is like a diploma. Charlotte Armstrong took the test 23 years ago but the state had no record of her scores. “I was in the drug world a long time,” said Armstrong, “I’ve been clean the last five or six years and I just decided, OK, new beginning, new life.

I started looking at adult education and literacy referrals for such probationers immediately, and soon found out that GED and high school equivalence opportunities were offered abundantly. From that point on, any time I discovered one of my probationers did not have at least his or her GED, I would refer them to an adult education and literacy program, and essentially begin to watch their lives improve. Not only were they getting an education and working toward a diploma or GED, but they were gaining more confidence and their self-worth was improving. I soon started to see where my probationers who had gone through an adult education and literacy program were getting pretty decent jobs, and able to complete the conditions of their probation. I asked if he thought it was because he was on probation that he was not getting job offers, and he said he felt that was part of it, but part of it was also the fact that many of the places wanted at least a high school diploma.
